C'est un mélange complexe d'hydrocarbures obtenus par la distillation de la fraction aromatique (lors du procédé de réformation catalytique du pétrole brut). Il est constitué d'hydrocarbures ayant un nombre d'atomes de carbone majoritairement compris entre 8 et 10 (C8 et C10) et possédant un point d'ébullition compris approximativement entre 135 °C et 210 °C (275 °F à 410 °F).
Le mélange testé et analysé (dans la publication de Beatty, P. et al., ) par chromatographie en phase gazeuse, contient (% en poids) : 
  • ortho-xylène (3,2);
  • cumène (2,74);
  • n-propylbenzène (3,97);
  • éthyl-4 toluène (7,05);
  • éthyl-3 toluène (15,1);
  • éthyl-2 toluène (5,44);
  • triméthyl-1,3,5 benzène (8,37);
  • triméthyl-1,2,4 benzène (40,5);
  • triméthyl-1,2,3 benzène (6,18);
  • hydrocarbures en C10 et plus de C10(6,19).

La publication indique que les proportions des constituants ci haut mentionnés varient selon la source d'approvisionnement en produit commercial.

Ce mélange est de plus conforme aux spécifications physiques et chimiques pour le "High Flash Aromatic Naphtha, Type I" telles que définies par l'American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM), méthode D-3734(1987).
