Dans le passé, le cyanure d'hydrogène était très utilisé comme fumigant, par exemple dans les meubles ou les silos de grain. De nos jours, il est plus utilisé comme intermédiaire pour manufacturer plusieurs produits chimiques très utilisés en industrie, notamment:

• l'adiponitrile pour la production de nylon
• le cyanure de sodium pour l'extraction de l'or
• le méthacrylate de méthyle pour la production de plastique acrylique
• des triazines utilisés dans des herbicides

Il peut aussi être généré dans l'opération de certaines installations industrielles comme les fours à coke et les hauts fourneaux.
