Le perchloroéthylène est utilisé dans les domaines suivants :

  • l'industrie du nettoyage à sec
  • le dégraissage et le nettoyage des pièces métalliques
  • la synthèse d'hydrocarbures fluorés
  • les décapants pour peinture
  • les encres d'imprimerie
  • la formulation d'adhésifs
  • les produits de nettoyage spécifiques, dont plusieurs sous forme d'aérosols
  • l'industrie textile (finition et teinture)
  • les liquides isolants pour transformateurs électriques
  • la désulfurisation du charbon.

Les activités de la vie quotidienne peuvent aussi contribuer, en faible proportion toutefois, à la dose absorbée de perchloroéthylène. Une enquête canadienne menée en 1995, a rapporté les valeurs de concentration moyennes suivantes:

  • l'air intérieur : 3,6 µg/m³ ou 0,53 ppb, ce qui représente une dose de 62,2 µg/jour
  • l'air extérieur : 1,15 µg/m³ ou 0,17 ppb, ce qui représente une dose quotidienne de 5,4 µg
  • l'eau potable : 0,5 µg/l, ce qui représente une contribution minime de 0,75 µg/jour

Depuis 2003, l'utilisation du perchloroéthylène dans les secteurs du nettoyage à sec et du dégraissage des métaux est régie par deux règlements fédéraux de la Loi canadienne sur la protection de l'environnement. Ces règlements visent à diminuer significativement les quantités de perchloroéthylène dispersées dans l'environnement.

Déjà, de 1994 à 2000, l'importation de perchloroéthylène au Canada a diminué d'environ 62 % (le perchloroéthylène n'est plus fabriqué au Canada depuis 1992) et, durant cette période, le secteur du nettoyage à sec a réduit son utilisation annuelle de 5 500 à 2 500 tonnes, principalement par l'installation de machines plus performantes à circuit fermé. Une norme internationale (ISO 8230) porte sur la sécurité des machines utilisées pour le nettoyage à sec.

Le second secteur en importance quant à l'utilisation du perchloroéthylène, celui du nettoyage et dégraissage des métaux, est régi par un système d'unités de consommation qui en limite l'utilisation, durant la période de 2004 à 2006, et qui prévoit une diminution de 65 % du volume total utilisé à partir de 2007.
