Le para-nitrotoluène est un des trois isomères obtenus lors de la synthèse du nitrotoluène par nitration du benzène. Les autres isomères sont le méta-nitrotoluène et l'ortho-nitrotoluène. La proportion de para-nitrotoluène produit est entre 35 et 40 %.

Le para-nitrotoluène est utilisé pour la production d'intermédiaires, qui servent à la fabrication de :

  • produits agricoles
  • caoutchouc
  • produits pharmaceutiques.

Le p-toluidine et l' acide p-nitrobenzoïque sont des exemples d'intermédiaires obtenus à partir du para-nitrotoluène.
