Bien que plusieurs solutions aqueuses contenant des concentrations différentes de formaldéhyde et d'un stabilisant (générallement l'alcool méthylique) sont disponibles commercialement, la solution la plus répandue est composée de 37 % de formaldéhyde et de 10 à 15 % d'alcool méthylique. Les informations contenues dans cette fiche se rapportent donc à cette solution de composition type. Il est à noter que la présence d'alcool méthylique permet de stabiliser les solutions de formaldéhyde en inhibant la polymérisation.

L'appellation «Formaline» utilisée pour définir une solution de formaldéhyde provient d'une marque de commerce dont la concentration en formaldéhyde est définie. Cependant cette appelation est aussi employée librement dans plusieurs pays et peut correspondre à des compositions variables de formaldéhyde et d'inhibiteur. 

Le United States Pharmacopia (USP) défini une solution aqueuse contenant au minimum 34,5 % de formaldéhyde et entre 9,0 et 15,0 % d'alcool méthylique.

Utilisation et sources d'émission

La formaline est utilisée principalement dans la fabrication de diverses colles, résines et vernis présents dans la production de contreplaqué, de panneaux agglomérés de fibres ou de particules (mélamine), de meubles et d'autres produits du bois.

Elle est aussi utilisée :

  • comme intermédiaire dans la synthèse de multiples autres produits tels :
    • le 1,4-butanediol, le triméthylolpropane,
    • le 2,2-diméthyl-1,3-propanediol,
    • le diisocyanate-4,4' de diphényleméthane (MDI),
      qui servent à leur tour à la fabrication de polyuréthane, de plastiques de type polyester, d'huile lubrifiante synthétique et de plastifiants,
    • l'acide nitriloacétique (NTA) et l'acide éthylènediaminetétraacétique (EDTA), agents complexants présents dans plusieurs détergents
  • dans la composition d'agent de conservation en thanatopraxie (services funéraires: embaumement)
  • comme fixateur, désinfectant et déshydratant de tissus biologiques (laboratoire de pathologie)
  • comme fumigant insecticide, germicide, fongicide (secteur agricole: fumigation de couvoir)
  • comme désinfectant, antiseptique et additif antibactérien (industries phamaceutique et cosmétique) 
  • pour la fabrication de noyaux et moules (fonderie)
  • dans la composition d'apprêt antifroissage et teinture (industrie de finition textile)
  • dans d'autres domaines et secteurs divers tels que l'industrie du papier (résistance à l'humidité et surface laminée (papier glacé)), l'industrie chimique (peinture et vernis, produits d'imprimerie et de photographie), les isolants minéraux non métalliques, l'industrie alimentaire (nettoyages d'aliments comestibles), pièces et composantes électroniques, l'industrie du cuir (apprêt et agent de tannage), la fabrication d'engrais, de fertilisants, et d'explosifs.
