Lorsqu'il n'est pas utilisé pour des fins alimentaires, on ajoute des substances dénaturantes pour le rendre impropre à la consommation. Ces substances sont entre autres : le méthanol, l'acétate d'éthyle, le méthylisobutylcétone, l'heptane ou le kérosène. Les dénaturants sont régis par une loi fédérale sur l'accise: Règlement sur l'alcool dénaturé (art. 125.1).

Utilisation et sources d'émission 2

L'alcool éthylique est utilisé principalement:

  • comme matière première dans la synthèse de produits chimiques;
  • comme solvant en laboratoires, dans l'industrie des peintures, des vernis, des encres, des matières plastiques, des adhésifs, des cosmétiques, des produits pharmaceutiques;
  • dans la fabrication des produits de nettoyage, d'insecticides;
  • comme désinfectant.

C'est un composant de base dans les boissons alcoolisées telles que : vin et cidre (10 à 13%), bière (0,5 à 7%) et spiritueux (40 à 50%).
