Par contre, les propriétés toxicologiques tiennent compte des composés inorganiques du manganèse puisque les effets observés sont attribuables au manganèse sous forme ionique.

Utilisation et sources d'émission

Le manganèse se trouve dans la nature principalement sous forme de minerais. Il existe plus de 250 minerais contenant du manganèse, sous forme d'oxydes, de carbonates ou de silicates. Les plus importants sont  la pyrolusite (MnO2), la rhodocrosite (MnCO3), la romanéchite (mélange d'oxydes de barium et de manganèse hydratés), le manganite (Mn2O3.H2O) et l'hausmannite (Mn3O4).  Aucun de ces minerais n'est exploité au Québec. D'autre part, on trouve aussi le manganèse à de très faibles concentrations dans l'eau, les plantes, les animaux et le corps humain. 

Le manganèse est un élément qui a la particularité de se présenter sous plusieurs degrés d'oxydation de -3 à +7, ce qui permet l'existence de nombreux composés inorganiques et organométalliques qui sont produits soit à partir des minerais, soit à partir du manganèse métallique.  Les principaux composés inorganiques sont le chlorure de manganèse, le sulfate de manganèse, le tétroxyde de manganèse, le dioxyde de manganèse et le permanganate de potassium ou de sodium.  Parmi les principaux composés organométalliques, citons: le méthylcyclopentadiényle tricarbonyle de manganèse (MMT), un additif antidétonant de l’essence, le manèbe et le mancozèbe, des pesticides utilisés en agriculture.

Sur le plan industriel, le manganèse est indispensable à l'industrie de l'acier, principalement sous forme de ferroalliages. Comme additif d'alliage, le manganèse confère à l'acier une dureté accrue et améliore plusieurs de ses propriétés mécaniques. Les alliages non ferreux, tel que l'aluminium et certains alliages de cuivre bénéficient aussi de l'ajout de manganèse pour améliorer leurs propriétés. Lors de la préparation des aciers, il est aussi employé comme agent de raffinement, pour se combiner au soufre résiduel du fer ou pour augmenter l'effet désoxydant de l'aluminium ou de la silice. 

En milieu de travail, le manganèse peut être émis sous formes de poudres, poussières ou de fumées, dans les secteurs tels que :

  • l'exploitation minière des minerais concernés
  • les fonderies, notamment celles de ferromanganèse et la production d'acier, que ce soit lors de la manipulation des matières premières où il peut y avoir émission de poudres et de poussières ou lors de la préparation des alliages où il peut y avoir émission de fumées
  • la métallurgie, lors des opérations d'usinage, de meulage ou de polissage, qui émettent des particules et lors des opérations de soudage ou de coupage qui émettent des fumées de manganèse.
