Commentaires

Les fumées de manganèse sont généralement constituées d'un mélange d'oxydes de manganèse.  La nature exacte de ces oxydes n'est pas précisée mais peu inclure entre autres, le dioxyde de manganèse, le tétroxyde de manganèse et le trioxyde de manganèse.

Sources d'émission

En milieu de travail, les fumées de manganèse peuvent être émises lors des procédés où des matériaux contenant du manganèse sont chauffés, fondus ou brûlés, notamment :

  • dans le secteur des fonderies, lors de la préparation des alliages, dont le ferromanganèse, les aciers et certains alliages d'aluminium, de cuivre ou de nickel;
  • lors des opérations de soudage ou de coupage de matériaux contenant du manganèse comme les alliages ferreux, ou certains alliages de cuivre, d'aluminium ou de nickel. 

La teneur en manganèse de ces alliages est généralement inférieure à 2%. Cependant, certains aciers peuvent en contenir jusqu'à 16 %. Le matériel d'apport peut être une source plus importante de fumée de manganèse que les pièces à souder, par exemple, dans le cas du soudage des aciers faiblement alliés par le procédé de soudage à l'arc avec électrode enrobée (SMAW). La fiche signalétique et les spécifications des alliages et du matériel d'apport de soudage devraient être consultées pour connaître leur  teneur en manganèse.
