En milieu de travail, la principale source d'exposition au monoxyde de carbone provient généralement des gaz d'échappement de moteurs à combustion interne et d'appareils de chauffage à combustibles. En effet, la combustion incomplète de carburants produit du monoxyde de carbone dont la quantité varie suivant la qualité du processus de combustion.

Le monoxyde de carbone est utilisé essentiellement :

  • en métallurgie comme agent réducteur, par exemple, pour l'extraction et le raffinage du nickel à partir de minerai brut (procédé Mond) ou pour la production d'aciers spéciaux;
  • dans l'industrie chimique pour la synthèse de nombreux composés, dont le méthanol, l'acide acétique, l'acide formique, l'acide acrylique, le phosgène, les polycarbonates, les polycétones, etc.;
  • pour la fabrication de métaux carbonyles, notamment le carbonyle de fer; 
  • pour la production de produits de haute pureté, par exemple : la poudre métallique, «blanc de zinc» utilisé comme pigment dans les peintures et les vernis;
  • comme gaz combustible, seul ou en mélange;
  • dans le secteur électronique, pour des procédés d'ablation en gravure de diélectriques.

La présence environnementale du monoxyde de carbone peut résulter de nombreuses activités industrielles, domestiques et même naturelles, telles:

  • les procédés et activités industriels énumérés ci-dessus;
  • les travaux de coupage et d'oxycoupage;
  • l'emploi d'explosifs (mines, chantiers hydroélectriques, etc.);
  • les travaux d'incinération des ordures;
  • les cimenteries;
  • l'utilisation d'appareils de chauffage au charbon, au gaz ou autres hydrocarbures (tels que poêle, four, génératrice, appareils à gaz défectueux);
  • le tabagisme;
  • la pollution atmosphérique par les véhicules routiers;
  • les incendies, feux de forêts et éruptions volcaniques.
