L'ortho-nitrotoluène est un des trois isomères obtenus lors de la synthèse du nitrotoluène par nitration du benzène. Les autres isomères sont le para-nitrotoluène et le méta-nitrotoluène. La proportion d'ortho-nitrotoluène produit est entre 55 et 60 %.

L'ortho-nitrotoluène est utilisé pour la production d'intermédiaires qui servent à la fabrication de :

  • produits agricoles
  • caoutchouc
  • explosifs
  • produits pharmaceutiques.

Le o-toluidine est un exemple d'intermédiaire obtenu à partir de l'ortho-nitrotoluène.
