Au Canada, en 1984, les quantités annuelles de manganèse (Mn) de source MMT émises dans l'atmosphère ont été évaluées à 210 tonnes, soit 11% du total des émissions générées par l'homme.

Depuis que l’utilisation du MMT dans l'essence s’est accrue, il paraît de plus en plus manifeste qu'une des principales sources de contamination au Mn inorganique serait associée à la combustion du MMT, plus particulièrement en milieu urbain où la densité de trafic est plus importante.

Le méthylcyclopentadiényle manganèse tricarbonyle (MMT) est un dérivé organique du manganèse (Mn) utilisé comme additif antidétonant pour l’essence sans plomb. Il vise à améliorer l'indice d'octane. Le composé pur contient environ 24,7 % à 25,2 % de Mn au poids. Typiquement, 72 mg de MMT contenant 18 mg de Mn peuvent être utilisés dans un litre d'essence. Cependant, au Canada, une étude a montré que la concentration moyenne de MMT et de Mn retrouvée dans la gazoline sans plomb à laquelle il y a eu ajout de MMT est respectivement de 26,5 mg / l et 6,5 mg / l.

Le MMT est fabriqué par Ethyl Corporation qui en produit 34 000 000 kg par an. Même si les propriétés antidétonantes du MMT ont été découvertes à la fin des années 1950, au Canada, ce n'est qu'en 1976 que le MMT a fait sont apparition dans l'essence. Toutefois, depuis quelques années, il sert de substitut au tétraéthyle de plomb dans l'essence et son utilisation a augmenté de façon substantielle. En effet, en 1990, le Canada a autorisé une substitution complète du tétraéthyle de plomb par le MMT.
