La méthyl n-butyl cétone peut être utilisée comme solvant, notamment pour la nitrocellulose, les peintures, les laques, les résines, les gras ou les huiles. Son usage est cependant en déclin.

Le produit peut aussi être un sous-produit indésirable dans les industries du bois, du charbon et du schiste bitumineux.
