L'hexane normal purifié contient entre 95 et 99,98 % d'hexane normal et quelques autres isomères d'hexane. Les hexanes commerciaux peuvent contenir entre 20 et 88 % d'hexane normal selon le type, la provenance ou le mode de production, les autres composants étant les différents isomères de l'hexane (isohexane, méthyl-3 pentane, etc.) et d'autres hydrocarbures.

Dans l'annexe I du Règlement sur la santé et sécurité du travail, il existe une réglementation différente pour l'hexane normal et les autres isomères d'hexane. Voir : hexane (autres isomères).

L'hexane normal est rarement utilisé sous forme purifiée. Il est plus souvent utilisé sous forme d'hexanes commerciaux dont il est le principal constituant. On utilise l'hexane :

  • comme solvant pour l'extraction des huiles d'oléagineux tels que les grains de soya, les graines de coton, les graines de carthame, etc.
  • comme solvant pour le dégraissage, le nettoyage ou autres usages, en imprimerie, dans les industries du textile, du vêtement et de la chaussure
  • comme composant des colles de caoutchouc ou autres adhésifs utilisés notamment pour le cuir, le caoutchouc ou les matières plastiques
  • dans les scellants, les peintures, les laques ou autres revêtements
  • dans la fabrication des polyoléfines, des caoutchoucs synthétiques et de certains produits pharmaceutiques
  • comme solvant de support pour l'huile de cèdre, la cire d'abeille, la lanoline
  • comme liquide de transport pour certains aérosols
  • dans les liquides correcteurs
  • dans les thermomètres pour basses températures, habituellement coloré en bleu ou en rouge
  • comme dénaturant de l'alcool éthylique.

L'hexane normal pur est utilisé en laboratoire, comme réactif ou comme étalon d'analyse.

Le gaz naturel et l'huile brute sont des sources d'hexane normal.

L'hexane normal est un constituant de plusieurs distillats de pétrole dont l'essence, le solvant de caoutchouc et l'éther de pétrole.
