Le N,N-diméthylformamide (DMF) est souvent appelé le ''solvant universel'' car il a un grand pouvoir de dissolution. Il est utilisé dans de nombreuses applications incluant: 

  • dans la production et le traitement de polymères
  • pour le filage de fibres de polyacrylonitrile et de polyuréthane
  • en tant que solvant de réaction ou de cristallisation dans plusieurs procédés pharmaceutiques
  • pour la purification de l'acétylène et du butadiène
  • dans des solutions de sels dans des condensateurs électrolytiques
  • comme solvant pour des encres d'impression ou des teintures

Des traces de DMF ont aussi été retrouvées dans certains aliments comme des saucisses, du vin, des raisins ou des champignons cuits.
