Auparavant, le benzène était principalement utilisé comme solvant. Aujourd'hui, il sert surtout de matière première ou d'intermédiaire pour la synthèse de nombreux produits chimiques. Ces derniers sont utilisés pour la fabrication de :

  • produits pharmaceutiques
  • pesticides
  • polymères
  • plastiques
  • colorants
  • résines
  • détergents...

Voici quelques exemples de produits chimiques obtenus à partir du benzène :

  • l'éthylbenzène utilisé pour la fabrication du styrène
  • le cumène pour obtenir le phénol et l'acétone
  • le cyclohexane
  • le nitrobenzène utilisé pour la fabrication entre autres de l'aniline
  • les chlorobenzènes.

Le benzène reste encore un peu utilisé comme solvant et réactif dans les laboratoires.
