Autrefois utilisé comme réfrigérant dans l'industrie du froid (congélation, climatisation...), comme agent de soufflage dans l'industrie du plastique et des polymères, comme solvant dans l'industrie du nettoyage (industriel et domestique) ou comme inhibiteur de corrosion dans les liquides de freins, l'usage du tétrachloro-1,1,2,2, difluoro-1,2 éthane a considérablement baissé à cause du renforcement de la règlementation visant à limiter l'usage des chlorofluorocarbures (CFC).
