L'utilisation principale du chrome est dans la manufacture de l'acier inoxydable, qui est un alliage acier-chrome. C'est la présence du chrome dans l'alliage qui le rend résistant à l'oxydation. L'acier inoxydable est utilisé dans une grande variété de produits d'usage domestique (casseroles, ustensiles, appareils électroménagers) et industriel (machinerie, contenants, tuyaux).

Le chrome peut aussi être utilisé dans le placage de métaux, dans des pigments, dans le tannage du cuir ou dans des catalyseurs.
