En collaboration avec certains de ses partenaires et clientèles, la CNESST a établi un programme d'intervention visant à assainir les milieux de travail où sont fabriqués des objets en polyester stratifié. Elle a élaboré des documents dans lesquels on retrouve des éléments de bonne pratique qui peuvent être applicables aux opérations dans ce type d'industrie.

Le styrène est utilisé pour fabriquer des polymères tels que le polystyrène, et copolymères tels que l'ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiène-styrène), le SAN (styrène-acrylonitrile), le SBR (caoutchouc de styrène-butadiène), le SBL (latex de styrène-butadiène) et de l'UPR (résines de polyester insaturé), ce dernier étant utilisé avec la fibre de verre pour la fabrication d'objets en polyester stratifié. Il peut servir de solvant pour certains caoutchoucs synthétiques et certaines résines.

Au Québec, la fabrication d'objets en polyester stratifié constitue le principal secteur d'activité où le styrène est utilisé. Les résines, enduits gélifiés (gelcoat) et mastics qu'on y utilise contiennent généralement du styrène.

Une grande variété de produits peuvent être fabriqués en polyester stratifié tels :
