Towards sustainable prevention … because Québec needs all its workers!

Foreword

Message from the President

Michel Després

In 2008, the CSST implemented its first sustainable development action plan, in compliance with the Sustainable Development Act enacted in April 2006. It thus made a long-term commitment reflected by concrete action. The action plan promotes increased integration of sustainable development in all spheres of the organization's activity, where applicable. Furthermore, sustainable prevention is now an essential part of the CSST's mission and has been integrated in its 2010-2014 Strategic Plan.

Over the years, the CSST proved to be a leader in raising awareness of sustainable development among its employees, clients and suppliers. We are very proud of this achievement. Here are some of the measures that were implemented:

  • The following CSST prevention action plans: one in the field of construction (Plan d'action Construction), one covering machine safety (Plan d'action Sécurité des machines) and one targeting young workers (Plan d'action Jeunesse). These plans resulted in a significant reduction in the number accidents and injuries;
  • Development of a new environmental management framework that prioritizes our actions and ensures that they reduce the environmental impact of our activities and services. What follows is an overview of the measures that were applied to achieve our objectives:

    • Formulation of a new document-distribution policy that places greater emphasis on electronic documents;
    • Large-scale implementation of video conferencing, which has significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions connected with business travel;
    • Integration of sustainable development clauses in leases to reduce the ecological footprint of our rental premises;
    • Adoption of an asset-disposition policy that promotes recycling and re-use.
  • Promotion of responsible purchasing practices among our suppliers;
  • Organization of ecologically responsible events.

With its sustainable development action plan, the CSST wants not only to maintain its gains, but also its position as an innovative leader in that regard. Thus, its main focus will be on employee training and it will continue to integrate sustainable development practices in the organization's projects in the coming years.

The CSST is also concerned about the workers and employers of tomorrow. It will ensure that tangible improvements occur in the workplace, while preparing the ground for the future. The Jeunesse action plan is eloquent testimony to that concern in that a number of its activities target students in occupational and technical training centres and are aimed at young workers and their employers. Generally, the CSST's goal is to ensure that its actions have an enduring effect, thus ensuring that long-lasting changes that will benefit future generations.

In Québec's economy, the CSST plays a principal role in supporting workers and employers in the areas of occupational health and safety prevention. With firm conviction, it will continue to strive for sustainable prevention.
